Exposing a Screen to Print Our Designs

The designs that we chose to expose for our prints. By exposing this screen it will allow us to print flocking, foiling and screen printing.
All black areas of these designs would be the print on the leather
Exposing the screen using UV light
Washing the emulsion out where the UV hasn't hardened it, this makes the design

Facebook discussions from week 1 until now.

geometric print

This is a geometric print i made to be used for our samples as another option/idea. we are thinking of combining foiling with flocking, having the shapes flocked, and the lines foiled - or vice versa.

Wares Brand-Colours and Logo

Line drawing trial with NZ landscape for engraving

We thought maybe some recognisable NZ landscape could be suitable as a line engraving for our samples. So I found some photos of Lake Tekapo, a popular tourist location to make an Illustrator line drawing.

Turns out it looks much like a colouring book then something desirable. It would have been better with tonal qualities but we decided to stick to simple lines/shapes and minimalist designs for the samples.

lecture, 23rd september

event planning:
WHAT - is the event. what is trying to be achieved.
WHY - for what purpose
WHO- the target audience, families, students, tourists, artists etc
WHERE - location is important. consider capacity.

BUDGET: things to consider are:
Wages, marketing and promotions, production, contingency, income
need to have vs nice to have.

Ways to fund an event -
sponsorship - where the benefits are mutual.
Fundraisers.
Grants from the government, see an advisor.

When:
work backwards from event date, create a timeline that way.

THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN DESIGN:

Design is interdisciplinary and require teamwork.
Technology is changing all the time, we will always be beginners in some way so get used to it.
What technicians want from a designer:
Feasibility - tell them what to achieve not how to do it
Enpower - don't worry, they don't play with your type.
Trust - you can't print on transparencies.
Comprehend.

collaboration is key
communicate
respect - everyone has deadlines
share  - awards and successes are great - so you shout the beer
recommend - what goes around comes around
feedback - if something went well or not well, mention it

laser cutting and engraving tests.

We booked the laser cutter in the fab lab this morning. We tested cutting and engraving with a selection of shapes and line sizes. It worked really effectively. the only issue we had was that the dust leftover from the engraving was easily smudged, leaving black marks on the leather and ruining the crispness of the lines. We tried removing the marks with a rubber eraser - this worked on the surface of the leather, but as soon as it got near the engraved lines/shapes it ruined the colour as seen in one of the images. if we had a setting/sealing spray that we could use on the leather after engraving to avoid this it would be good.

Mocking Up a Sample Book Design

Overall mockup design, closes like a book would.

An information pocket for the techniques. How to do them, what their characteristics are. It might be nice to put removable flyers in there so that customers can take one as they please.

A cardboard header to go over our samples. A nice clean professional way to display them

Our samples are going to be A5 so we wanted to make it big enough for that however A4 would be  too big. This is the difference in size it has to A4. I think it is nice being small and compact.
